There is something very strange happening in our skies when we're asleep. We're surrounded by an obscure ambience.
Kalas Liebfried collects thoughts and sounds – echoing references and rhetorical figures as sculptural material that condenses into narrative sonic layers in installative arrangements: Auditory spaces, moods and situations that blur the here and make us forget the now. The potentials of these atmospheres are mobilized, dynamic fields of action are marked out and released as catalysts of performative interactions.
Aesthetic and discursive formations, critical approaches under the sign of ambient: background, environment, spatialization, objectification and superimposition – Liebfried appropriates musical methods and processes to let immersive (sound)spaces emerge and to negotiate imaginary places that form their own zones and send omnidirectional signals. The framing is driven by findings of intensive artistic research between archive and apparatus, acoustics and philosophy, media archaeology and cultural technology.
OBSCURE AMBIENCE retraces Kalas Liebfried's projects in the period from late 2018 to early 2021: Including i.a. "Corps-à-Corps feat. MC Nancy" (Kunstverein Munich, 2018), "Selected Ambient Works 85-92" (solo exhibition, Nir Altman Galerie, Munich, 2019), "Ambient for a Silent Forest (Pinakothek der Moderne, 2019), "Ports in Transition" (Onassis Stegi, Athens and Lenbachhaus, Munich 2020).
